CHAPTER 7
We spent another three days with no progress. Nothing but the scenery, and no movement at all. Each day, we kept on analyzing the video and setting up the devices for more information. As for the one watching out for animals, I wondered if our animal would appear if Iâd added something sweet like chocolate, but Jack told me no. According to him, food like chocolates and onions can be lethal for some animals, and we didnât want to risk having additional unhappy dead.
Anyway, the lack of progress suited me well, and I was beginning to enjoy doing little to nothing in the rich nature. Each and every day, the scent of the grass seemed to be different, and the mountains started to look more magnificent. At least, Iâd mastered the art of mentally photoshopping the plain-green rocky mountains with the golden maple leaves Iâd seen in the autumn in Illinois.
However, the next thing, the camera facing the beef jerky captured movements.
On the screen was the picturesque riverside scenery in the twilight. The bushes swayed like they were dancing in the wind. For a while, we were watching a scene that seemed to go well as a backdrop for some music video or infomercial.
All of a sudden, something snapped and the screen turned blurry.
âSomethingâs in the video.â I pointed at the bottom left area on the screen. There was something black, looking like a pointy nose. âWhatâs this? A dogâs nose?â
âFocus on the screen.â Jackâs tone was tense. I didnât know what was so disturbing in this video, but I shut up and kept my eyes on the moving something.
The animal moved slowly, gradually getting closer to the area with scattered beef jerky. Little body, pointy ears, and sparkling eyes. âIs that a dog? Perhaps, mixed kinds?â I looked at Jack.
âI think itâs a fox,â he replied curtly and stared at the screen.
Dog or foxâwhatever it wasâproceeded to the meat strips, and its upper body became fully visible. I felt something wasnât right with it. One of its shoulders looked unnaturally reddish black.
âIs he hurt?â As I muttered, the video snapped several more times. At this point, I knew some kind of paranormal activity was going on. Snapping topped with static was a sign of ghostly presence.
Pow! A louder snap resembling the sound of a gunshot echoed, and the whole body of the animal appeared.
âWhatâ?â I gasped. Jack was right. It was a fox. The thick fur, long, pointy ears, and the fluffy tailâit was like watching National Geographic Channel. It was little, maybe it was young. Or perhaps, it could have been a fennec fox instead of a regular fox. It had a slight resemblance to Pikachuâeven though the popular Pokémon was a kind of mouse and not a fox. The sight of it walking in small strides was cute, and I could have been oohing and ahhing if it wasnât for a certain issue.
The problem was; it wasnât a regular animal I used to see at the zoo and on TV.
